Pavilion of Manifesting Benevolence and Pavilion of Expanding Justice in the Forbidden City

The traditional aesthetic standards in China appreciate the beauty of balance and symmetry, which is fully reflected in the architecture of the Forbidden City: the Pavilion of Manifesting Benevolence and the Pavilion of Expanding Justice in the Forbidden City are located on the east and west sides of the Square before the Hall of Supreme Harmony and served as human and material resource centers of the Qing dynasty.

In the early Qing dynasty, the Pavilion of Manifesting Benevolence was used to give examinations of “Bo Xue Hong Ci” (Profound Knowledge and Flowery Language) for recommended literati.
