Known as the Gate of Succeeding the Heaven in the Ming dynasty, the Gate of Heavenly Peace was changed to its current name at the beginning of the Qing dynasty and was the very place for holding national ceremonies and issuing important edicts, e.g. the edict announcing the new emperor ascending the throne. It is towered with a high pavilion and Iooks very splendid. There are seven white bridges called “Outer Golden Water Bridge” over the imperial river in front of it, two pairs of stone lions on the northern and southern ends of the bridges, and a pair of ornamental columns representing the nation on the left and right sides in the south.
