Forbidden City Maps
Because of its centrality as well as restricted access, Palace Museum was called The Forbidden City, called Gu Gong in Chinese. Lying at the heart of Beijing, Forbidden City is approached through the Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tian'an men). Immediately to the north of the Palace Museum is Prospect Hill (also called Coal Hill), in Jinshan Park, while on the east and west are Wangfujing and Zhongnanhai neighborhoods. The location was endowed with cosmic significance by ancient China's astronomers. the Forbidden City, was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Rectangular in shape, it is the world's largest palace complex and covers 74 hectares. Surrounded by a six meter deep moat and a ten meter high wall are 9,999 rooms. The wall has a gate on each side. Opposite the Tiananmen Gate, to the north is the Gate of Divine Might (Shenwumen), which faces Jingshan Park.
