Gold Bells and Jade Chime of the Forbidden City
Ese musical instruments were used to play “Zhong He Shao Yue” (Beautiful Music of Harmony) during grand ceremonies.In the early years of the Republic of China, the small court of Puyi still lived inside the Forbidden City. At the excuse of being hard in keeping balance for the livings ot tne royal family and his courtiers, he pawned this set of Gold Bells together with some 100 pieces of gold ware, including gold seal, gold album d gold stupa at an extremely low price of 800,000 silver yuan to the Bank of Salt Industry. After the establishment of the eople’s Republic of China, the Central Govemment took back he whole set of the Gold Bells from the Bank of Salt Jndustry in1953 and put it into the collections of the Palace Museum.
