Green Jade Dancing Figure of the Forbidden City
With the reopening of the Silk Road and the cutting of the Grand Canal in the Sui and Tang dynasties, cultures of the e Western Regions (a Han dynasty term for the area west of Yumenguan, including what is now Xinjiang and parts of Central Asia) came to the Central Plains. New patterns of flower, bird and figure influenced by Western Regions and Buddhism appeared for the first time in jade. The Dancing Figure was based on an image of the Western Regions. The other examples are the Jade Flying Apsaras, Jade Lion and Jade Peacock. They were all influenced by Buddhism and the remote culture in the West Regions.
