Gallery of Enamel and Cloisonne in the Forbidden City


Enamel The Gallery of Enamel and Cloisonn6 is in the Palace of Rever-ing Yang in the East Route. There are more than lOO enamel and cloisonn6 works of art on display, which date from the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) to the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and re-flect the splendid achievement in enamel and cloisonné in an-cient China. They also show us the creativity of the Chinese people in absorbing other cultures to develop traditional craftsmanship.

The enamel techniques in China can be divided into two categories: One is cloisonné and the other is panted enamel. Among the exhibits, there are Cloisonne Burner with Entwined Lo-tus and Two Ears of the early Ming dynasty, Rectangular Cloiscsonne Dish with Seven Lions Playing ar a Ball of the Xuande period (1426-1435), . and Painted Enamel Pot with Copper Body and Handle of the Qianlong period (1736-1795). They are all excellent works of art.

He Cloisonne with copper bodydy is very popular in China. It was introduluced into China from Arabia at the end of the 13th century. Because the enamel objects were very popular in Jingtai period of the Ming dynasty (1450-1457) and the basic color of the objects was generally blue. It was called Jingtai Lan. Lan means blue in Chinese.
