Gilded Copper Clock with the Decoration of a Witing Figure in the Forbidden City

Gild-Cooper-Clock-With-The-Decoration

This work of art was made by Williamson, a well-known clockmaker in Britain. It is unique in its mechanical driving. With springs wound up, a western figure in suit began to write eight Chinese Characters: “Ba Fang Xiang Hua Jiu Tu Lai Wang” (Ail com-ing to pay homage to the emperor). The strokes were done with force and the callig-phy is well composed and very elegant. It is a great surprise that a clock made by a western man could write such beautiful Chi-nese characters. It is a reflection of the :raftsman’s wisdom and creativity. It also shows the importance of China in the world in the 18th century.
