Black Lacquer Clock with The Design of Congratulating on Longevity in the Forbidden City
It was made in the Qing court with strong national characacteris-tics and adopted traditional architectural form. It is a desk clock with a two-floor pavilion. The stand of the clock is a Iong table with colored designs of happiness and longevity in black lacquer.The left side of the clock is a setting of comparing with one another for seniority and the setting on the right is immortals congratulating on longevity. All of them can move when springs are wound up. On the top floor, within each of the three windows,there is a small figure with a chiming bowl. When the clock ikes, the windows will open automatically and the three fig-ures jump out at the same time knocking on the chiming bowls to indicate the time. Then, they move back and the windows close. It took 5 years for the clock to be made. It and is a representa-tive work of the Qianlong period 1736-1795).
In addition to the works made in China, Britain and France, there are clocks and watches from Italy, merica,Switzer-land and Japan in the Gallery.With different styles and high-leve 1 :raftsmanship, they are all precious works of art.
The Palace Museum has a large collection of clocks and watches, representing the highest achievement in clock making from the i8th century t0 20th century. They witnessed the cultural exchanges between (hina and the world and are a showcase of extraordinary craftsmanship at home and abroad.
