Hall of Manifesting Harmony in the Forbidden City

On each side of the front steps before the Hall of Manifesting Harmony in the Forbidden City stands a bronze phoenix. The inscription on the plaque of the Hall “Xiang Feng Wei Lin” means that the owner of the Hall lives together with phoenixes. It was in this Hall that Em-peror Guangxu selected his empress and imperial concubines. The plaque with the inscription of “Ti Yi Bao Yuan” written by Empress Dowager Cixi is hung in the Hall. When Empress Dowager Cixi lived in the Palace of Concentrated Beauty, the Hall was used as her dining hall.
