After the custom of burying alive with the dead was abolished, the Palace of Benevolent Tranquility in the Forbidden City was built in the e Ming dynasty for the consorts of the previous emperor to live in. Emperor Dowager Xiaozhuang is the first person living here in the empress dowager here once in the morning and once in the evening. During the festivals, it was here that the emperor dowager accepted the felicitations of the emperor, empress, concubines and officials.

There are a number of halls for worshipping Buddha in the Complex. In the Qing dynasty, a two-storied building was converted into a large hall for worshipping large Buddhist statues of the Past, the Present and the Future. The Garden of Benevolent Tranquility is like a Buddhist world, where 108 Tibetan Buddhist sutras were worshipped; chanting and religious rituals were also held here.
