Lodge of Fresh Fragrance in the Forbidden City

When the Palace of Double Glories was built, the Lodge of Fresh Fragrance in the Forbidden City was specially constructed as an entertainment place to show the refinement of the Qianlong emperor With its shape in“工” and its layout fresh and lively, it has a distinctive style.In its courtyard, there is a large stage for performing operas during imperial festivals. The name of the back hall is “Jin Zhao YuCui” (Gold Shiny and Jade Pure), in the east of which there is a horizontal board with the inscription “Gao Yun Qing” (affection with high clouds) written by the Qianlong emperor, and in the west of which is a small indoor stage named“Fen Ya Cun” (elegance retained) set for the imperial family to appreciate the highlights of operas at family banquets.

During the festivals, the emperor would come here to appreciate operas after he had received felicitations. Emperor Dowager Cixi was especially fond of operas. She once ordered famous actors,such as Tan Xinpei, Chen Delin, Yang Xiaolou and Mei Lanfang, to come into the Forbidden City to present performances.
