Garden of Creating Happiness in the Forbidden City

Constructed in the fifth year of the Qianlong period (1740), the Garden of Creating Happiness in the Forbidden City is a 4,000-square-meter Garden converted from two of the Five Western Courtyards.

In 1923, the Xun Di (emperor of abdication) Puyi suspected his eunuchs of stealing treasures and planned to check all the storages in the Garden of Creating Happiness. On the night of June 26th, the whole palace was fired. The fierce fire burned down the classic garden constructed at the order of’ the Qianlong emperor. Later, the cleared-up ruins were converted into an imperial tennis ground.

Now, the Palace Museum is carrying out the reconstruction project of the Garden of Creating Happiness, which has already rebuilt the Pavilion of Extending Spring and some other buildings.
