Palace of Earthly Tranquility in the Forbidden City

The Palace of Earthly Tranquility in the Forbidden City was the residence of the Ming empress, who would live there from her wedding, if not deposed, until her death. After the Qing dominated the Central Plains, the Palace was re-structured according to the Manchu customs. The west part was used to offer sacrifices to the gods while the east part served as bridal chamber, where the imperial couple would stay for three days after wedding ceremony, in order to show the sublime position of the empress among imperial consorts.
