Hall of Expanding Virtue in the Forbidden City

The Ming and Qing emperors came to the Hall of Expanding Virtue in the Forbidden City very often. In the official Qing records, the Hall was known as the imperial office and dining room. On the New Year’s Day, it was the very place for the Qing emperor to take dumplings. The more common activities carried out in the Hall, esp. In the Kangxi period (1662-1722), were academic discussions and lectures. When Emperor Tongzhi was young, the empress dowagers often came here to deal with state affairs. When Tongzhi reached school age, the Hall was converted into his study.
