In the early Qing dynasty, the first hostess of the Palace of Obeying the Heaven was Dong’eloved concubine of Em-peror Shunzhi. She was daughter of-.shuo, the Deputy Head of mperial Troops and was of Plain White Banner, Manchu origin. Dong’e originally was wife ofPrince Bomuboguo’er, younger rother of Emperor ShuThe Emperor’s extraordinary love or his sister-in-law led to the suicide of Prince Bomuboguo’er Emperor Shunzhi then married his sister-in-law and entitled her as Imperial Honorable :o ncubine. The couple was ery much in love. However, he young death of their child roke the heart of Dong’e. She ssed away out of sadness. He emperor was so grieved hat he wanted to become a k after her death. He issuedimperial edict to declare her posthumously as the Empress Xiaoxianduanjing and a grand ceremony was held for this special occasion. The emperor lost all his interest in the world ever since and died soon after the death f his beloved.

The Palace of Obeying Heaven is now the Gallery of Bronzes.
