Behind the Gate of Heavenly Purity is the residential quarter of the imperial couple. A 50-meter-long and l0-meter-wide causeway connects the Gate and the Palace of Heavenly Purity.It was reserved for the emperor while the others had to make a detour via terraces on the east and west of the square before the Palace.

The residential quarter of the imperial couple mainly consists of three buildings, which are surrounded with wings and located in a large courtyard. As the emperor's bedchamber was moved out of the Palace of Heavenly Purity in the Yongzheng period of the Qing dynasty, the wings were converted into various offices, storages and studies.
