Well of Concubine Zhen in the Forbidden City

A small house north to the Pavilion of Revering Goodness is where Concubine Zhen in the Forbidden City was confined by Empress Dowager Cixi. If you go through a small door, you will see the Well of Concubine Zhen where she was drowned to death.

Concubine Zhen was the beloved concubine of Emperor Guangxu. Because of supporting the Reform of Guangxu, she as in serious conflict with Cixi and was put into confinement and not allowed to meet the Emperor. When the Allied Forces of Eight Powers stormed into Beijing, Empress Dowager Cixi ordered eunuchs to push Concubine Zhen into this well and drown her before leaving Beijing.
