Imperial Garden in the Forbidden City
The Imperial Garden in the Forbidden City was known as the Garden behind the Palace and was changed to its current name in the Qing dynasty. It covers 12,000 square meters and accounts for l.7% of the Forbidden City, in which there are four gardens, i.e. The Imperial Garden, the Garden of Benevolent Tranquility, the Garden of creating Happiness and the Qianlong Garden. Among them, the Imperial Garden is the largest one.
The Imperial Garden was a place for the imperial family to take a rest and hold various activities to celebrate festivals.
The Imperial Garden was also a junction in the Inner Court: the Gate of Obedience and Chastity lies north to the big screen wall and south to the Square before the Gate of Spiritual Valor. The Garden's south gate, the Gate of Earthly Tranquility, is the entrance of the three Rear Palaces. The West Gate of Jeweled Garden in the southwest is the portal to the Six Western Palaces while the East Gate of Jeweled Garden in the southeast is the portal to the Six Eastern Palaces.
